Overview

In the Spring of 1940, Aristides de Sousa Mendes — the Portuguese consul-general in Bordeaux, France — saved thousands of Jewish refugees by issuing visas contrary to the strict orders of his government. Years later, he was posthumously named "Righteous Among The Nations" by Yad Vashem.
