Kosher Winery Damaged As Wildfires Rage On In Northern California

(J. The Jewish News of Northern California via JTA) — A kosher winery in Northern California sustained widespread damage from a wildfire still raging along the southern part of the Silverado Trail in Napa County.

Ernie Weir, owner of Hagafen Cellars, the North Bay’s only kosher winery, said Wednesday that all employees are safe and the main winery building is intact, but that the fire destroyed fencing, all of the agricultural equipment, a guest house, nearly an acre of Cabernet Sauvignon vines and all of the property’s trees.

In the newest Eataly, the culinary marketplace of all things Italian, there’s a small slice of Jewish Rome.

Laura Raccah, a pastry chef, makes kosher artisanal cookies from fine ingredients, and sells them all over Italy – including train stations, from large glass containers --  and now in New York City. Last month, her husband Joseph Matalon was at Eataly, offering samples of several varieties of cookies make by “Mondo di Laura.”

The Nosher – Growing up in Seattle, it’s easy to fall in love with pho. Nearly as ubiquitous as coffee shops or teriyaki spots (yes, teriyaki), pho restaurants seem to be just around every corner of the city. This is only natural, of course – Israel is the Jewish State, after all. Further, Israel produces a terrific volume of kosher wines (roughly 50 million bottles annually), and while the Israeli lake of kosher passable plonk is both wide and deep at times, some Israeli wine is not only very good indeed, but truly exceptional.

The Nosher/JTA – One of my favorite weeknight meals to make these days is mujaderra. Just rice and lentils cooked together and topped with a glistening pile of sautéed onions. It’s easy to see why it’s known as Middle-Eastern comfort food. There are so many variations of this recipe, but my favorite involves just five ingredients — rice, lentils, olive oil, salt and onions.
